The Training Unit is a vital component in any professional organization. Lieutenant Caleb Lacey serves as the Training Coordinator and oversees all aspects of training. Training Staff includes Assistant Training Coordinator Deborah DeVolin, Academy Training Sergeant Tommy Jones, Firearms Training Sergeant/Range Master Carlos Chavez, and Background Investigator Corporal Marshall Williams
The Training Unit is responsible for providing professional development and maintaining training requirements mandated by the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement (TCOLE) by providing continuous in-service training and strict adherence to standards during sessions of the Odessa Police Academy.
All sworn officers of the Odessa Police Department undergo the annual firearms training mandated by TCOLE. In addition, officers regularly train with de-escalation, less-than-lethal alternatives to force, and defensive tactics.
TCOLE License
The Texas Commission on Law Enforcement granted the Odessa Police Department a license on March 4, 2010, and the first session of the Odessa Police Department Police Academy began August 2, 2010. The Odessa Police Academy advisory board consists of 7 civilian members of the community.
New State-of-the-Art Training Facility
OPD has a new state-of-the-art training facility that is around 8,000 square feet. It is located right next to the police station. A ribbon-cutting ceremony was held for the building on November 2, 2021.
